Why Filipinos keep smiling, even when it hurts

Life is expensive, but joy doesn’t have to be. In this time of soaring prices, when the rest of the world says, “You can’t afford happiness.” Filipinos say, “Watch us find it anyway.”

Because joy, to us, isn’t something we buy, it’s something we make. When there’s no electricity, we bring out the guitar. When onions hit ₱700 a kilo, we make memes and turn it into a national inside joke. When floods rise knee-deep, we float on a styro box, Bluetooth speaker in one hand, beer on the other.

Across the country, Filipinos are turning to accessible joys, simple things that cost little but mean a lot. A rewatch of “Four Sisters and a Wedding” because “bakit parang kasalanan ko?” never gets old. A teleserye cliffhanger, a budol finds haul, a piso load to send “ingat ka” to your crush. A ₱20 spend on an online game that gives just enough of a thrill to carry you through the day.

This is joy in recession. Simple, affordable happiness that fits in our day, in our budget, and in our hearts.

Filipinos spend over nine hours a day online, more than any other country in the world. But it’s not mindless scrolling. It’s connecting and coping. It’s “G na G,” “Sana all,” “Kapit lang,” our digital mantras, typed with humor… but rooted in grit.

“What you’re seeing isn’t escapism, it’s resilience,” says behavioral psychologist Dr. Ana Reyes. “Filipinos use low-cost entertainment, whether it’s a livestream, a TikTok, or a casual game, to anchor themselves. It’s both catharsis and connection.”

This phenomenon isn’t new. All over the world, pop culture has thrived not in times of prosperity, but in crisis. Hollywood was born in the Great Depression. Anime rose from post-war Japan. K-pop surged during Asia’s downturn.

And in the Philippines? When tragedy strikes, culture erupts, loud, proud, hilarious, and heartfelt. Hardship doesn’t cancel joy. It sharpens it. It teaches us to cherish what little we have.

And that’s why simple pleasures, from a livestream karaoke to a quick game played in between shifts, are never just distractions. They’re declarations. They say, “I may be struggling, but I haven’t stopped living.” “Deserve ko ‘to.”

So, when people look at the rise of low-cost entertainment, especially forms that offer a thrill, or a bit of fun for just a peso or two, maybe the question isn’t “Why?” Maybe the real question is, “How could we not?”

In a world that keeps telling us to harden up, Filipinos choose to stay soft. And rightfully so. In the middle of a crisis, we still look for a reason to laugh and to play. That’s the uniquely Pinoy super power. Raw. Real. Ridiculously resilient.

Because for people who’ve sung through brownouts, danced through floods, and cracked jokes in the middle of a heartbreak, chasing temporary, affordable joys is not a luxury. It’s a lifeline. And when the world says, “You can’t afford happiness,” we say, “Kaya pa naman.” “Meron pa rin.” “Meron at meron.” “Padayon.”

For 20 years, BlueWater Day Spa has been that go-to space — the quiet sanctuary in the middle of everyday rush. Known for its curated massage experiences and signature treatments, the spa has helped countless Filipinos recharge, reset, and find their glow again.

Laughter and energy filled the room as BlueWater Day Spa’s brand ambassadors engaged with the crowd during their official introduction. From left: Host Queen Semana shares a fun exchange with Korean actor Choi Bo Min and Filipino actor-singer Teejay Marquez at the 20th Anniversary Media Launch held at The Westin Manila.

Last July 10, BlueWater Day Spa celebrated this milestone and ushered in a new chapter. The event marked the official introduction of two new brand ambassadors: Teejay Marquez, a multi-talented Filipino actor and singer known across Southeast Asia, and Choi Bo Min, a rising Korean actor-idol and current lead in Beauty Empire on GMA and VIU.

Their presence reflects what BlueWater Day Spa has become — timeless in values, yet fully in touch with the now.

Ambassadors Who Pamper with Purpose

When Teejay Marquez spoke on stage, it wasn’t just to charm the room. It was to share something personal: his approach to rest and recovery in a demanding career.

BlueWater Day Spa ambassador Teejay Marquez shares his favorite massage treatments during the media launch held at The Westin Manila.

“The Balinese Massage helps me recover after long days on set,” Teejay explained. “I also love the Thai Yoga Massage — it stretches me out and rebalances everything. It really helps me sleep better.”

It’s the kind of insight that resonates with anyone who’s tried to keep up with a packed calendar. For Teejay, making time to slow down isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.

Then came Choi Bo Min, who won hearts not only with his calm charisma, but with his surprising fluency in relaxing.

“The Traditional Filipino Massage was new to me — but so good, I fell asleep halfway through,” he said with a smile (“That’s how good it was.”). “I’d also like to try the Korean HIFU treatment — it’s popular in Korea and helps define the face. That’s something I’m curious about.”

Bo Min’s choices reflect what BlueWater Day Spa has cultivated over time: a mix of authentic local treatments and globally inspired offerings, making it relevant for both Filipino loyalists and international stars alike.

A Legacy of Consistency and Care

What sets the spa apart is its blend of technique and experience. From Traditional Filipino hilot, to Thai and Balinese massage styles, to modern non-invasive facials like HIFU, each treatment is backed by international training, ensuring high-quality results across locations.

“Bringing in an international ambassador like Bo Min isn’t just a PR move,” shared one insider. “It reflects the truth — that BlueWater Day Spa offers treatments and service standards that meet global expectations.”

Five Reasons Why Gen Zs Are Hooked on Puregold Channel’s Si Sol at si Luna

Emotions were super-charged in “Meet the Family,” the cliff-hanger episode 6 of Puregold Channel’s hit digital series Si Sol at si Luna, as Sol (Zaijian Jaranilla) and Luna (Jane Oineza) bade their time in getting together again. In this episode, Sol spent time with Ara and her family, as a kind favor to her, while Luna looked back on happier times with Andy—how he could make her smile even on the bleakest days.

Netizens braced themselves for heartbreak, doubtful about Sol making it to their long-awaited meetup. But the episode’s powerful twist? Sol shows up and finds Luna waiting as the episode closes.

Scenarios like this keep fans glued to their screens as each episode airs on Puregold’s YouTube Channel. Gen Z viewers, especially, find thrill and excitement in each turn, recognizing their own romantic episodes as they relate to Sol and Luna’s journey.

Here, check out five reasons why young followers of Si Sol at si Luna are hooked on the series:

Flawed but genuine characters. Sol is not perfect—he makes silly mistakes, like choosing Luna over an important responsibility and hurting someone in the process. But Sol owns up to his errors, and fans are quick to forget.

This authenticity touches young viewers who are grappling with messy friendships and relationships themselves.

Grief is treated with honesty and nuance. Luna’s grief in the series is not simply a backstory; it is raw and real, like how we experience it in real life. She tries to function, to laugh, and to feel alive again, but her grief comes and goes, often unexpected and overwhelming.

Luna’s story depicts how people process loss—in quiet moments, one day at a time.

It’s a love story, but not the usual kind. Aside from its intriguing and provocative theme—an age-gap relationship—Si Sol at si Luna is not for the wide-eyed romancevjunkie. It’s slow-burn, with crippling doubts, wrought by past wounds, new responsibilities, and personal battles that won’t magically go away.

Si Sol at si Luna is a love story with a reality check, resonating with how we truly experience love.

It understands how Gen Zs think and feel. From quiet anxiety to emotional burnout, the show captures the internal struggles that young people feel—the pressure to move on, connect, and feel something again.

Si Sol at si Luna is a cathartic passage for people who see their own journey in the show’s leads.

The show appeals to different generations. While Si Sol at si Luna has racked up a huge fan base among Gen Zs, Puregold’s Senior Marketing Manager Ivy Hayagan-Piedad believes that the show cuts across demographics with the life lessons it offers. “We’d like to think that viewers of different ages see themselves depicted in the narratives of Si Sol at si Luna. Whether people are dealing with their first heartbreak, reliving a past love, or learning to let go, we are sharing this story so they will know they are not alone.”

In Episode 7 of Si Sol at si Luna ‘The Interview’, we finally see more of Sol and Luna together as Sol begins his heart-to-heart interview with Luna for his film project.

But will this newfound intimacy spark thoughts of romance?

United under one roof: How Puregold brought generations of OPM together in the Philippine Arena

Puregold’s OPM Con 2025 went from simply sensational to timeless as the multitudes that trooped to the Philippine Arena on July 5 were treated to surprise guests culled from OPM’s rich roster of exceptional talents. Already super-charged with the energy of today’s biggest artists—BINI, Flow G, G22, KAIA, SB19, Skusta Clee, and SunKissed Lola—OPM Con 2025 went on stealth mode and dropped a gaggle of other OPM biggies on thousands of unsuspecting fans in the vast arena.

Still flush from the tremendous success that was OPM Con 2025, Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, Senior Marketing Manager of Puregold, excitedly shared, “Puregold’s common language across its 500 stores nationwide is not just groceries but also music. Hence, we gathered our loyal shoppers and gave them a world-class concert experience featuring our own brand endorsers.”

Piedad further expressed yet another significant purpose behind the concept: “The night was about celebrating who we are as Filipinos—our stories, our music, and our shared pride. Seeing fans come together is one panalo moment we are very proud of.”

The first surprise popped up during BINI’s set, when James Reid stepped out to join the girls for a smooth mashup of “Secrets” and his own R&B hit “Di Bale.” The crowd roared, and just like that, the tone was set: anything could happen.

Hannah Molarca of the Philippine Daily Inquirer described the number as a “a collab to die for.” Twitter user @ciaogiacomoReid echoed the sentiment with a post that read, “pasabog performance indeed!!”

And just when things felt like they’d peaked, Stell (SB19), Charlotte (KAIA), and Alfea (G22) emerged mid-performance to join BINI in a synchronized dance for “Shagidi”—uniting P-Pop’s finest in a single, show-stopping showcase.

Then came the full-circle moment: Mayonnaise, the iconic 2000s rock band, surprised fans by joining KAIA for a live rendition of “Jopay.” The collab felt especially meaningful for KAIA’s Angela, who once went viral for covering the song on TikTok in 2022. Now, she was singing it with the original band—before a frenzied arena crowd.

“Grabe namang pasabog ‘to!” wrote @KittyOfreneo4 on Twitter speaking on Mayonnaise’s appearance. The official SoundCheckManila on Twitter even posted, “Never thought we would see this but we ain’t complaining! When P-Pop meets rock, sparks fly!”

Later on, iconic singer-songwriter Yeng Constantino performed her hit song “Salamat” alongside the magnetic PPop trio of G22. Yeng even posted a backstage video of her and G22 harmonizing together while singing the song. The video had netizens like @rayaaau_ on Twitter begging, “We need a studio ver pls.” Fellow user @bro_bonk also shared how impressive the G22 collab performance was, saying that “ibang klase ang kanilang performance with Yeng Constantino, napapakanta ang audience.”

As SB19 performed “Liwanag sa Dilim,” the crowd roared oncemore as OPM royalty Rico Blanco stepped onto the stage. Then came the unexpected twist: Blanco grooved to “Dungka” alongside SB19, G22, and KAIA, with BINI’s Sheena joining the mix. Three of the country’s biggest girl groups united to celebrate this climactic moment. It wasn’t just a performance—it was a grand statement.

Puregold’s OPM Con 2025 was not a celebration of what OPM has been; it was a glimpse into what it can be. A genre that constantly evolves, yet never loses its soul. OPM Con 2025 honored the past, elevated the present, and gave the future a colossal stage to stand on. From stadium anthems to nostalgic throwbacks, Puregold created a space where the entire spectrum of Pinoy sound could shine. And in doing so, Puregold OPMCON is now officially one of the biggest historic moments in Philippine music.

DTI, PRA, and SCMAP launch “Job Blueprint” with SM Supermalls

The future of employment in the Philippines’ wholesale and retail trade sector got a major boost on June 16, 2025. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), together with the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) and the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP), officially launched Section G: Job Blueprint for the Wholesale and Retail Trade Sector at SM City North EDSA. The initiative included a two-day job fair, offering immediate hiring opportunities to Filipino job seekers.

The Section G Job Blueprint, developed through extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, highlights the strong collaboration between government, the private sector, and mall leadership to address workforce gaps in retail and supply chain. Serving as a foundation for future reforms, it aims to boost employment growth by leveraging the sector’s vital contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its role as a key employer of over 10 million Filipinos, according to the DTI.

Industry support and immediate impact

The job fair, which offered hundreds of career opportunities from leading retailers and logistics providers, drew a diverse crowd of job seekers eager to engage with PRA and SCMAP member companies recruiting for roles in merchandising, warehousing, logistics, and frontline retail.

“This is more than just a job fair—it’s a call to action,” said Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President of Marketing at SM Supermalls. “We are proud to partner with DTI, PRA, and SCMAP in hosting this meaningful initiative that connects people to opportunity and promotes inclusive employment.”

SM Supermalls, as host venue and promotional partner, reinforced its commitment to national workforce development and economic recovery. This event is part of SM’s ongoing support for programs that empower micro-, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), job seekers, and industry players.
